As you all can easily notice, Ketu is the lord of the 1st Nakshatra i.e. Ashvini and the sequence of planetary lordship after Ketu is followed in the below mentioned fashion:
I.e. Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury
The above pattern or sequence gets repeated 3 times i.e.
- From 1st to 9th Nakshatra
- From 10th to 18th Nakshatra
- From 19th to 27th Nakshatra
Even the Vimsottari Dasha (The Most widely accepted dasha system), is also based on the same sequence. In short, Vimsottari Dasha sequence is directly dependent on the sequencing of Nakshatra lordships.
For example, after the Vimsottari dasha of Ketu, Vimsottari dasha of Venus will come, followed by Vimsottari Dasha of Sun. Similarly, Vimsottari Dasha Moon follows dasha of Sun and the sequence goes like this.
Now, have you all ever wondered that why the cycle starts with Ketu or why Ketu is given the lordship of the 1st Nakshatra, why Venus is given the lordship of the 2nd nakshatra and why exactly the sequence is followed by Sun, then moon, then Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury respectively?
I know, most of you, must be whispering that Nikhil, we never thought that why such specific sequence from Ketu to Mercury is followed.
So friends, you simply need not worry as your friend Nikhil is about to give you the reasoning behind all this and that too in a very short, systematic and logical manner. Please note that the answer to this question is not clearly mentioned in any Astrological book or text and whatever your friend Nikhil will be sharing through this article is part of his research work.
Anyways, let’s straightaway come to the concepts as neither you nor I have the time to waste.
See, as you all know that unless we get rid of all the karmic bondage’s that we all have incurred or accumulated in our past lives, we will keep taking birth on this planet again and again.
Now, Ketu specifically represent our past Karmas and therefore links any two lives, as we take birth because of karmic bondage only. Ketu also represent eternal truth i.e. Moksha or enlightenment and to achieve Moksha or complete purity, one has to pass through the repetitive cycle of birth, death and re-birth.
In short the root-cause behind your birth or your friend’s Nikhil’s birth or for that matter birth of any human is our past actions or karmas which are represented by Ketu only, hence Ketu is given the lordship of the very first Nakshatra (i.e. Ashvini).
Now once it’s decided that we are going to take birth, next step is to attain physical existence through the successful fusion of sperm and egg, which is basically represented by Venus, therefore the lordship of the 2nd Nakshatra (i.e. Bharani) is given to Venus.
Soon after the fertilization, soul attaches itself to the fertilized egg and we all know that Sun is the Karaka of Soul. Hence lordship of the 3rd Nakshatra (i.e. Krittika) is given to Sun.
Mind represented by Moon, comes next into existence in its nascent state, therefore lordship of the 4th Nakshatra (i.e. Rohini) in line goes to Moon.
After the establishment of the objective behind birth, physical existence through fertilization, attachment of soul and initiation of Mind, formation of body as well as energy is needed, that is actually governed by Mars. Hence lordship of the 5th Nakshatra (i.e. Mrigashirsha) is given to Mars.
Now since we have the objective behind birth, physical existence, soul, mind and body, the next step is to focus on all the unfulfilled Karmas or actions which are represented by Rahu, hence Rahu gets the lordship of the 6th Nakshatra (i.e. Ardra) in line. Here point which is to be noted is that each of our karma fails to achieve completion or purity (which is needed for attainment of Moksha) because of Jealousy (Irshya), Anger (Krodh), Want /greed (Lobh), Attraction (Moh), Injustice (Anyaye), Passion/Lust (Kaam), Hatred (Ghradna), Laziness (Aalasya), Ignorance (Agyan), False (Asatya), Fear (Bhaye) and all these parameters are under the scope of Rahu ONLY. Secondly whether it’s Nikhil or you or anyone, no one can escape the parameters of Rahu without the blessings of that almighty.
While walking on the path of Karma fulfillment and after overcoming the parameters of Rahu, soul begins to realize its own self and our self is represented by none other than Jupiter. Therefore lordship of the 7th Nakshatra (i.e. Punarvasu) is given to Jupiter.
Once the soul realizes its own self, purification of actions automatically follows and we all know that Saturn, the most powerful planet (out of all 9 planets), primarily signify the flawless or ideal actions/karmas. Hence lordship of the 8th Nakshatra (i.e. Pushya), goes to Saturn.
Lastly, the ideal or flawless actions leads to the development of supreme intelligence, which is indeed the primary and the most important faculty associated with humans. This intelligence falls under the jurisdiction of Mercury, therefore lordship of 9th Nakshatra (i.e. Ashlesha) is given to Mercury.
Now from the 10th Nakshatra (i.e. Megha) and 19th Nakshatra (i.e. Moola) the planetary lordship sequence repeats itself.
Remember that this planetary lordship sequence i.e. Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury; repeats 3 times covering all 27 Nakshatras. In the first round of journey from objective of birth (i.e. Ketu) to attaining supreme intelligence (i.e. Mercury) is in its early or initial stage, 2nd round represents middle stage and in the last round, the journey completes its final stage.
Now let me also explain the reasoning behind the allotment of specific Mahadasha years to each planet.
Mahadasha Constraint
Total Vimshottari Cycle = 120 Years
A single Mahadasha cannot exceed one-sixth of the total Vimshottari cycle.
Now, Why a Single Mahadasha Cannot Exceed One-Sixth of the Total Vimshottari Cycle ?
The Vimshottari system is designed around a complete human life cycle of 120 years. The purpose of the system is to ensure that the influence of all nine grahas is experienced in a balanced manner during the soul’s journey through life. If one planet were allotted an excessively large duration, it would dominate the entire life structure and disturb the equilibrium of the system. Therefore, a natural upper limit appears necessary. The fraction 1/6 is particularly significant because:
120 ÷ 6 = 20 years.
A 20-year Mahadasha is long enough for a planet to fully manifest its karmic agenda. Yet it is short enough to allow multiple major planetary influences to operate during a complete lifetime. Had the upper limit been larger:
120 ÷ 5 = 24 years,
120 ÷ 4 = 30 years,
then one or two planets could dominate a disproportionately large portion of life. For example, Saturn’s actual zodiacal cycle is approximately 30 years. If such a value were directly adopted, a single Saturn Mahadasha would occupy one-fourth of the entire Vimshottari cycle, reducing the relative importance of other planets. The 20-year limit therefore appears to strike a balance between:
- Allowing sufficient time for a graha to unfold its karmic effects.
- Preventing any one graha from monopolizing the entire life experience.
- Preserving the cyclical participation of multiple planetary energies within a 120-year framework.
Therefore:
120 ÷ 6 = 20
Maximum permissible Mahadasha = 20 Years
This naturally places an upper limit on the duration allotted to any single planet.
SATURN
Saturn’s Mooltrikona sign = Aquarius = 11
Saturn’s Exaltation sign = Libra = 7
11 + 7 = 18
Saturn’s second sign (Capricorn) was not included in the calculation.
Therefore a compensatory value of 1 is assigned for the omitted sign:
18 + 1 = 19
Saturn Mahadasha = 19 Years
VENUS
Venus‘s Mooltrikona sign = Libra = 7
Venus Exaltation sign = Pisces = 12
7 + 12 = 19
Venus’ second sign (Taurus) was not included in the calculation.
Therefore a compensatory value of 1 is assigned for the omitted sign:
19 + 1 = 20
Venus Mahadasha = 20 Years
SUN
Sun’s Mooltrikona sign = Leo = 5
Sun’s Exaltation sign = Aries = 1
Sun has only single sign, hence no correction needed.
5 + 1 = 6
Sun Mahadasha = 6 Years
MERCURY
Mercury’s Mooltrikona Sign = Virgo = 6
Mercury’s Exaltation Sign = Virgo = 6
Mercury has a unique dignity structure, since Virgo happens to be Mercury’s own sign, Mooltrikona sign as well as exaltation sign. Basically, Virgo is performing all three functions simultaneously.
Please note whenever Mooltrikona sign and Exaltation sign of a planet is same, then own sign number of planet’s higher sign should also be added.
Therefore:
6 + 6 + 6 = 18
We only required Mooltrikona sign consideration along with exaltation sign but since Virgo happens to be Mercury’s own sign, therefore an overlap correction is applied i.e. we need to subtract 1
18 − 1 = 17
Mercury Mahadasha = 17 Years
MOON
Moon’s Mooltrikona sign = Taurus = 2
Moon’s Exaltation = Taurus = 2
2+2 = 4
Just like Mercury, Moon too has a unique dignity structure, since Taurus happens to be Moon’s Mooltrikona sign as well as exaltation sign
Please note whenever Mooltrikona sign and Exaltation sign of a planet is same, then own sign number of planet’s higher sign should also be added.
Moon’s own sign = Cancer = 4
2 + 2 + 4 = 8
Correction Rule:
Whenever the principal sign involved in the calculation is less than one-fourth of the maximum possible Mahadasha value (i.e. less than 5), a correction factor of +2 is applied. As stated above the maximum Mahadasha possible in Vimshottari system is 20 years. One-fourth of 20 equals 5. Taurus i.e. 2 is less than 5
Therefore:
8 + 2 = 10
Moon Mahadasha = 10 Years
MARS
Mars Mooltrikona sign = Aries = 1
Mars Exaltation sign = Capricorn = 10
1 + 10 = 11
Mars is the primary significator of the physical body, vitality, blood, muscles, strength, survival instinct and the ability to act in the material world. Among all planets, Mars is the most strongly connected with the gross physical manifestation of life. Since the body itself is subject to decay, limitation and mortality, the debilitation principle assumes special importance in the case of Mars.
Therefore here the number of Mars debilitation sign is deducted.
Mars Debilitation sign = Cancer = 4
11 − 4 = 7
Mars Mahadasha = 7 Years
KETU
Ketu do not have any Own sign or Mooltrikona sign
Therefore Ketu’s duration is derived from its exaltation sign.
Ketu’s Exaltation sign = Scorpio = 8
Since Ketu possesses no sign ownership, Therefore a compensatory value of 1 has to be deducted
8 − 1 = 7
Ketu Mahadasha = 7 Years
JUPITER
Jupiter is unique. Although its Mooltrikona sign is Sagittarius (9), that value will not be used. That’s because, Jupiter sign number i.e. 12 of Pisces naturally aligns with its natural astronomical cycle of approximately 12 years through the zodiac.
Jupiter’s natural astronomical aligned sign = Pisces = 12
Jupiter’s Exaltation Cancer = 4
12 + 4 = 16
Jupiter Mahadasha = 16 Years
RAHU
Just like Ketu, Rahu too do not have any Own sign or Mooltrikona sign
BUT Unlike Ketu, Rahu represents expansion, desire, obsession, illusion, unfulfilled cravings and limitless worldly pursuits. Its scope cannot easily be confined through sign based calculations. Unlike Rahu, Ketu signifies hidden truth, detachment, spiritual depth, karmic residue, inner wisdom and the root cause behind manifestation. That’s why sign based calculations were applied in case of Ketu as shown above.
BUT sign-based calculations cannot be applied in case of Rahu
Hence Rahu’s Mahadasha is derived from its astronomical nodal cycle.
Rahu takes approximately 18.6 years to complete one cycle through the zodiac.
Therefore:
Rahu Mahadasha = 18 Years
EXPLANATIONS FOR THE 3 rules USED above:
The One-Fourth Threshold Correction Rule
The zodiac consists of 12 signs, but not all signs contribute equally when represented numerically. When a planet’s calculation is primarily dependent upon very small sign numbers (1, 2, 3 or 4), the resulting value tends to under-represent the actual significance and operational scope of that planet within the Vimshottari framework. Therefore, a corrective adjustment becomes necessary. The threshold is fixed at one-fourth of the maximum possible Mahadasha value.
Since:
Maximum Mahadasha = 20 years
One-fourth of 20 = 5
any principal sign value below 5 is treated as belonging to the “lower numerical quadrant” and receives a compensatory adjustment of +2.
Symbolic Justification
The first four signs of the zodiac represent the earliest stages of manifestation:
- Aries – Birth of existence
- Taurus – Stabilization
- Gemini – Differentiation
- Cancer – Emotional formation
These signs correspond to the foundational stages of creation rather than its mature expression.
Consequently, when a Mahadasha calculation relies heavily upon sign numbers from this foundational quadrant, the raw numerical value may not adequately represent the full karmic significance of the planet. A correction factor of +2 therefore compensates for this under-representation.
Mathematical Justification
The zodiac may be divided into three equal groups:
- Signs 1–4
- Signs 5–8
- Signs 9–12
The first group represents only the first one-third of the zodiacal journey and contains the smallest numerical values. Without a correction mechanism, planets associated with these low-numbered signs would systematically receive disproportionately smaller Mahadasha values. The +2 adjustment acts as a normalization factor, preventing distortion caused purely by low sign numbering.
Philosophical Justification
Ancient astrological systems frequently employ balancing principles.
A number may represent:
- Quantitative value, and
- Qualitative significance.
When quantitative value becomes too small, a balancing correction is often introduced to preserve qualitative significance.
Thus, the +2 correction does not increase the intrinsic power of the planet; rather, it restores proportionality within the Mahadasha framework.
Justification Behind the +2 Correction Factor
One possible question could be “If a correction factor is required, why specifically +2? Why not +3, +4 or some other value?” To answer this question, we must first examine the correction factors already employed elsewhere within the framework.
For example:
- Venus receives a correction of +1 because its second sign (Taurus) is not directly included in the calculation.
- Saturn receives a correction of +1 because its second sign (Capricorn) is not directly included in the calculation.
- Mercury receives a correction of -1 due to the overlap between its Mooltrikona, exaltation and sign ownership.
- Ketu receives a correction of -1 because it possesses no sign ownership.
Thus, throughout the framework, the standard correction magnitude remains extremely small, namely ±1.
However, in the case of Moon, the calculation is heavily dependent upon Taurus (2), which lies within the first quadrant of the zodiac and possesses a numerical value significantly lower than the midpoint of the zodiacal range. As a result, the raw value obtained from the calculation tends to under-represent the actual significance of the planet. A correction therefore becomes necessary. At the same time, introducing a correction of +3 or +4 would violate the overall philosophy of the framework, since all other adjustments remain confined to a narrow range of ±1. Therefore, the smallest meaningful enhancement beyond the normal correction range is adopted, namely +2. In other words, +2 represents an extraordinary correction applied under extraordinary circumstances, while still remaining sufficiently close to the standard correction magnitude already observed elsewhere in the framework. This preserves both numerical balance and internal consistency.
Hence:
- Normal adjustments = ±1
- Exceptional adjustments = ±2
- Larger corrections such as ±3 or ±4 are deliberately avoided because they would introduce disproportionate distortion into the system.
Thus the +2 correction serves as a minimal extraordinary adjustment rather than an arbitrary numerical manipulation.
LASTLY, why did we deducted 4 in case of Mars ?
So the deduction of 4 in the case of Mars should not be viewed as a correction factor at all. Rather, it is part of the primary calculation rule applicable specifically to Mars. The correction factors used elsewhere in the framework are intended merely to compensate for structural peculiarities such as:
- Omitted sign ownership,
- Overlapping dignities,
- Absence of sign ownership,
- Extremely low numerical sign values.
These adjustments are therefore secondary in nature. The Mars deduction is fundamentally different.
Mars is the primary significator of the physical body, blood, muscles, vitality, action, courage and survival instinct. Among all planets, Mars possesses the strongest connection with the gross physical manifestation of life. The physical body is unique because it is simultaneously the vehicle through which karma is experienced and the greatest limitation imposed upon the soul. Regardless of strength, vitality or achievement, every physical body is ultimately subject to weakness, decay and mortality. For this reason, the debilitation principle assumes exceptional importance in the case of Mars. Therefore, while calculating the Mahadasha duration of Mars, its debilitation sign is not introduced as a correction but as an integral component of the rule itself.
Hence:
Mooltrikona (Aries) = 1
Exaltation (Capricorn) = 10
Debilitation (Cancer) = 4
Calculation:
1 + 10 − 4 = 7
The subtraction of 4 therefore represents a core Mars principle and not a numerical adjustment. Consequently, it should not be compared with the ±1 and ±2 correction factors applied elsewhere in the framework.
