Even for the well experienced Astrologer, sometimes it becomes difficult to identify a really powerful chart. Most of the astrologers knowingly or unknowingly, do give more importance to Sthan bal as compared to other bals and even if they give equal importance to all kinds of bal, they usually fail to incorporate the importance of each of those bals in a sequential manner to arrive at the overall auspiciousness of the planets in the charts. Basically, as soon as we see exalted, swarashi planets in shubh sthan well supported by D-9 chart we tend to believe that this planet is indeed very strong from all the aspects, which is wrong.
Now what exactly, I am trying to say?
To move forward in life we all need few parameters:
- Potential-Sthan bal, Varga bal, Kaal bal, Naisargik bal etc.
- Intention-Chestha bal
- Right Direction-Dig bal
- External or environmental Support-Drik bal
The same is the case with planets i.e. for a planet to give auspicious results all the above factors are important and each of the above factors comes from different form of “BAL” under Shad bal scheme:
Strength through Shad bal consists of:
a) Sthan Bal (contains Uchh bal, Sapt vargaj bal, Oja yugma bal, Dreshkana bal, Kendra bal etc)
b) Dig bal
c) Drik bal
d) Chestha bal
e) Naisargik bal
f) Kaal bal (Contains Natonata Bal, Paksha bal, Varsh, Maas, Din, Hora bal, Ayan Bal, Yudhh Bal etc)
Whether a planet has the potential to deliver can be understood from its Sthan bal, Varga bal, Kaal bal, Naisargik bal etc.
Intention of any planet can be known from its Chestha bal and also by the NATURE of planets joining or aspecting it.
Directional part is taken care by the Dig BAL gained by a planet. Assume the placement of the moon in 10th house [since moon is dig bali in 4th house in 10th it looses its dig bal (though there are several exceptional rules as well w.r.t concept of Dig Bal)] this will not mean that the native will not be able to choose right direction in life but it would definitely mean that person will find it hard to move in that direction. Basically, he would have to move against the tide like if a swimmer wants to move against the tide, he would obviously find it hard to do.
Drik/drig bal relates to the support which a planet derives from the planets influencing the reference planet through conjunction, aspect, exchange, trine linkage etc. Hence, these planets can give appropriate external support which may help in nourishing the overall auspiciousness of the planet.
As an example, Imagine you have to perform on the stage and you have all the skill or potential as well as intention to perform i.e. you have necessary Sthan bal and Chestha bal. Since you are on stage, therefore you are in the right direction too i.e. you have dig bal too, the only thing which you now need is the support from the audience and your family members. As soon as the audience and your family members will start shouting and repeating slogans in your favor, you will automatically get the required Drik/drig bal and you will surely perform well. Hope, your friend Nikhil have made things very clear on this.
Apart from shad bal, you also need to see many other Non-Shad bal factors like, determining:
a) Strength of sign lord of a planet (sign lord has to be analyzed separately for strength with the help of 10’s of other concepts).
b) Strength of Navamsa sign lord of a planet. (Navamsa sign lord has to be analyzed separately for strength with the help of 10’s of other concepts).
c) Strength which comes from Vargottam (both Rashi and Bhava) concept.
d) Strength which comes from Pushkar Navamsa and Bhaga concept.
e) Strength which gets lost through Combustion.
f) Strength which gets lost through bad Avastha.
g) Strength which gets lost through Planetary War.
h) Strength which comes from different house placements of the planet. (Like mth lord in nth house).
i) Strength which comes from Argala concept.
j) Strength which comes from Arudha concept
k) Strength which gets lost through Marana Sthan concept etc
All these concepts are not part of Shad bal. All these shad bal and non shad bal factors have to be applied w.r.t all the planets, only after that prediction should be made.
When we define all the above factors with respect to each planet then the next step is to coagulate the above knowledge with the ongoing dashas or dashas in progress.
For example if the dasha sequence is Jupiter(MD)-Moon(AD)-Saturn(PD)-mercury(SD)-Venus(PrD)-sun(DD). Then all the shad bal and non shad bal factors w.r.t each planet should be listed, analyzed and then judged to make a logical sequence of their auspiciousness corresponding to the probable event.
